  • I ran across this crime novel on the new books shelf at our library and liked the synopsis. It reads like a gritty cop noir with more emphasis placed on atmosphere and attitude than police procedural. That's right in my wheelhouse. The setting is Nigeria, and the homicide lieutenant Tammy is a hard-nosed but honest-to-the-core investigator. Fast, satisfying read.

  • This book got a bad review from PW but I really enjoyed it. It was short and sweet and the plot wasn't that bad. Politics, corruption, and violence all come together in a bombing investigation that morphs into a murderathon. We meet a competent detective, Tammy, who has his chief's ear and quickly proceeds to embarass his boss by his aggressiveness in investigating every lead. Tammy doesn't know when to stop and seems always one step behind the murderers. It was nice also to read a book about Afri [...]

  • First Line: The lead officer briefed us as we walked through the chaotic scene.Detective Tamunoemi ("Tammy") Peterside is thrown right into the middle of a heated political race when one candidate's home is destroyed by a bomb. The person at the top of the suspect list is that candidate's opponent. As Peterside tries to get to the bottom of this mess, anyone who might possibly be a witness to the bombing is murdered, and Peterside's superiors set up a constant barrage of advice for him to stop i [...]

  • Nigeria's megacity of Lagos is well known around the world, but this debut police procedural takes place a 10-hour car ride down the coast to the east, in the comparatively unknown Port Harcourt. Make no mistake, although the city is only about the 5th or 6th largest in the country, it's still got more than 1 1/2 million people, and its position in the heart of the Rivers State delta oil country make it important. The crime that kicks off this slim book is a bomb targeting a candidate for the st [...]

  • TREACHERY IN THE YARD by Adimchinma Ibe is a Nigerian noir police procedural. The story, a short novel (160 pages), broke my reading slump. In the normal course, I don’t like this type of book. People are mostly bad, doing bad things. Politics and corruption are probably similar throughout the world. There’s a high body count and quite a lot of violence, but it’s mostly off-scene.However, in TREACHERY IN THE YARD, I was intrigued. As sometimes happens to me in stories, the protag makes deci [...]

  • I liked Treachery in the Yard because it was a good story first and foremost. The police procedural wrapped in the plot is very minimal. What is obvious is that respect for procedure among the Nigerian police is not a big deal. Even Tammy has no patience for procedure and just does what he needs to do. The corruption and lack of procedure is not surprising because most Nigerians know that the Nigerian police lacks resources, like Tammy complains about lack of forensic backing, and will sometimes [...]

  • A Nigerian more procedural than thriller, yet with enough thrill and action on its 160 pages to also call it a thriller. Detective Peterside investigates a bomb explosion and a body, and then the body count starts to go higherQuite short, but fast paced, and perfect length for this book. Now I crave for more just the type of break I needed from the ah so omnipresent Scandinavian crime. There was a very Nigerian, dusty and exotic, atmosphere in the book, and a neat collection of types of people. [...]

  • This is a very short book, looking at police work that uses the mind and not fancy test and such that are present in US mysteries. Actually it was quite a good book I'll read any future books by this author.

  • A really quick read - the writing is a little too much tell and not enough show, and I thought the ending was abrupt, but I liked Detective Peterside and his drive to find out the truth and do the right thing despite his cynicism about everything.
