  • I picked up this book because I majored in philosophy and know absolutely zero about this subject. I had hoped to hear the voices and arguments of the thinkers who make Africana philosophy a distinct subdiscipline. This book has a remarkable paucity of direct quotations from the those thinkers. Gordon also goes overboard in regards to rehashing the history of Western philosophy. The book should take us immediately into the words and minds of Africana philosophers, but instead you have to wade th [...]

  • This text is a comprehensive overview of the roots history and current directions of Africana Philosophy. However for those who are not already students of philosophy it is a good idea to keep the internet handy so that one can understand that references to people like Hegel, Derrida, Foucault, and others that Gordon makes reference to in his text. For that reason Intro to Africana Philosophy can be a bit of tough read but is extremely fulfilling despite this.It is very valuable as a gateway int [...]

  • more a bibliography of Africana philosophers to read than an incisive intro to said authors and ideas. mostly Africanamerican, mostly thinkers you have heard of if not read, familiar names like web Dubois, Franz Fanon arguments and assertions of originary work preceding even the Greeks. interesting, good place maybe to start, not a good place to end
