Broad geographic (Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest) and temporal scope means it is a survey of America's kitchens, not an in-depth treatment of any one region or time period. Great starting place for any historic house museum kitchen-related project. Powerful mix of text, illustrations, and bibliography. Contains fantastic thread of women's/family history as evidenced through [...]

  • I'm currently researching the role and meaning of the 21st Century American trophy kitchen and LOVED this book. Meticulously researched and full of amazing photos, drawings, and other items of material culture, it's incredibly interesting and visually stunning. Definitely need to own this book one day when we're done moving around so much.

  • As a kitchen designer and lover of social history, I was completely fascinated by this book and wish I had written it myself! Great illustrations, I wish there had been even more. I would also love to read a book comparing American kitchens to others around the world, maybe I will write that one
