    About " H.P. Lovecraft "

  • H.P. Lovecraft

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.Lovecraft s major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity Lovecraft s protagonists usually achieve the mirror opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.Although Lovecraft s readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe.

  • Objectively considered, this should have been a Lovecraft masterpiece. Unfortunately (as is often true of predictive analysis), the story itself didn’t turn out that way. Here are the facts so you can decide for yourself. H.P. wrote “Dreams” in 1932, a few months after “The Shadow over Innsmouth” and more than halfway through his final decade of mature work, a period triggered by his failed marriage and fearful sojourn in New York and nourished by a return to his native Providence. Love [...]

  • Masters of Horror: season 1, episode 2This short story was just not my cup of tea. I struggled through it, but it was a hard, hard story to complete.

  • I listened to this on the SFF Audio Podcast sffaudio/?p=48997. The actual book reading was 1hr 42min followed by discussion of the book.I remember seeing the Masters of Horror TV show adaptation which came off pretty creepy. The book itself not so much. I mean the witch coming for the protagonist through his dreams with the little rat creature Brown Jenkins, with the human face and 4 hands, were pretty creepy, and there is a lot of weird and grotesque elements in the book, but a lot of the psych [...]

  • This science fiction paranormal horror story should be enough for any fan. Or you could be like me and like one part more than the other (the second one). The mathematical explanations aren't my thing. It can get a bit too detailed for my taste. Still, the main idea that if we knew the right mathematical formulae, we wouldn't be bound to our dimension or universe is interesting. I liked the idea for the story itself and that ending didn't hurt it one bit. Walter Gilman becomes obsessed with a wi [...]

  • These old sci-fi/horror stories are fun. They are filled with Victorian era supposition (or post-Victorian in this case) in which scientific explanation is given for the supernatural. These stories come out of a time when science started to be able to explain things like time and space and so credence was given to some historical superstitions. My favorite such example was: "Elwood agreed that Gilman had good scientific grounds for thinking she might have stumbled on strange and significant info [...]

  • We had to read this for class, along with At The Mountains of Madness (also by Lovecraft), and I have to say that I enjoyed this one much more than ATMM.

  • Read this as part of The Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft.A delightfully creepy story - though one wonders why the students insisted on living in such a place. I think I would've rather slept outside than slept in this house. A very solid entry in Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos.

  • This was a very powerful and vivid story. Lovecraft used his theme of long walks in this story and it worked in rather well.

  • This seemed pretty standard for the Lovecraft I have read. He tends to write through so many veils, and keeps so distant from his material, that it is hard to empathize with any of the characters, even as horrible things are happening. I guess that may just be a part of writing about unspeakable horror. If he actually spoke it, it would cease to be unspeakable. And this story comes pretty close. The idea that witchcraft may just be advanced math is pretty scary. Its one that also comes up, to dif [...]

  • "The Dreams in the Witch House" is a short story by H. P. Lovecraft, written in February 1932 and first published in the July 1933 issue of Weird Tales. Well it certainly was that, a weird tale that is. Also, I am absolutely sure that none of this could ever have happened to me, even if there wasn't an old woman's ghost and a white, hairy, sharp-toothed thing called by the townspeople “Brown Jenkin”— running around the house. It is rather surprising I ever got through the first few paragra [...]

  • After having gotten side-tracked by Stephen King's delicious The Bazaar of Bad Dreams I got back to the second half of this wonderfully creepy classic. Lovecraft may have been a racist, and some of his depictions of "foreigners" and "immigrants" in this story illustrate that xenophobic stereotyping, but he was still a master at crafting delightfully eerie tales of the weird and disturbing. This is a perfect example.

  • Here we have Lovecraft's take on a wicked witch, and it's one of my favorites. You've got most of the classic themes - strange math and weird geometry, different dimensions and higher states of being, a historical mystery whose unraveling leads to madness and insanity, deals with shadowy avatars and strange unnatural creatures - what's not to love.

  • Possibly Gilman ought not to have studied so hard. Non-Euclidean calculus and quantum physics are enough to stretch any brain; and when one mixes them with folklore, and tries to trace a strange background of multi-dimensional reality behind the ghoulish hints of the Gothic tales and the wild whispers of the chimney-corner, one can hardly expect to be wholly free from mental tension. This is the Principia Mathematica meets the Blair Witch Project, with an unexpected splash of Alien. The trans-di [...]

  • As usual Lovecraft manages to quietly terrify you while you aren't paying attention. (view spoiler)[One moment you're just minding your own business, the next your heart is being eaten by a rat (hide spoiler)] I liked everything about this story. The setting--as always--was atmospheric. The main character was welling meaning and intelligent, but as usual, oblivious to the fact that (view spoiler)[he was ultimately doomed (hide spoiler)]. And then there's Brown Jenkin. Who will, most likely, haun [...]

  • Dreams in the Witch House is an excellent short story of black magic, a nasty old witch, her ratty familiar, and a few poor college students of Miskatonic University who decide to save a few bucks by staying in the local haunted house, currently with rooms to let dirt cheap. This is excellent Lovecraft, in my opinion, and I enjoyed the story of Walter Gilman immensely. There's blood sacrifice, slanted ceilings and scratching behind the walls. There's travel to different dimensions. References to [...]

  • I found The Dreams in the Witch House to be one of my personal favorites of H.P. Lovecraft's. Something else very unique to this story -- in contrast with other works of Lovecraft's -- is the fact that many minor characters are fleshed out; as opposed to just the narrator -- as is the usual in many of Lovecraft's stories. Also, I found this story to be a successful blend between narrative and action; many of Lovecraft's tales have a heavy fixation on third-person narratives and vivid descriptions [...]

  • I've enjoyed the Lovecraft shorts I've read so far, but the prose is too melodramatic for me to get into The Dreams of the Witch House. The introduction explains that H.P. Lovecraft wrote it in frustration after At The Mountains of Madness was rejected multiple times for publication. It may be that he decided to write a classic witches story to appeal to a wider audience.
