  • The Alldens, described as an "ordinary family" live in a large, three storey house in a not-too-smart part of Bath. Emily and Don have four children who, unsurprisingly, are all very different. The eldest, Liz, lively and intelligent, and given to casual sex; Lotte the well-behaved goody-goody, Clive who is quite odd and treats his mother appallingly, and lastly Benjamin a late addition, enjoys music and finally realises he is gay. • Will Eaves's third novel is an everyday story about a family from Bath, the Alldens, Don and Emily and their four children. They're a very ordinary family, except that Clive, the older of their two sons is autistic and his brother Benjamin is gay. Looking back, we are shown relatively little of their day to day doings – but the bits we do see are done in detail, intelli [...]

  • The prose is sparkling and energetic and enjoyable to read. I found the characters pretty boring but then the suburban dysfunctional family is not my favorite genre.

  • SPOILER: A kind of family survival story of a family based in Bath. All I can say is that the mother dies in the end by which time I had lost interest in anybody.
