  • I was utterly charmed by this story of Abita, a half-Choctaw young woman who is raised in an Indian village until she is ten and from that age on by a Louisiana farmer and his wife. She draws upon knowledge and skills from both worlds when she travels alone to Vicksburg to bring home her wounded sweetheart. The story has plenty of suspense, a bevy of interesting side characters (both menacing and helpful), and a heartwarming romance. Told in Abita's voice, the book is exceptionally well written w [...]

  • Abita is a young woman living in-between two cultures near the area where I live. In these sesquicentennial year milestones of the Civil War this ebook was a great read. I love the photo of the young woman.

  • What a wonderful book, a simply wonderful story. IRON BRANCH is written in first person, which immediately made me empathize with Abita, the main character. She tells of being half Choctaw, which she describes as "in-between". She's very matter of fact about the way things are in her part of the world--in Northern Louisiana during the Civil War. It's a love story with some good plot twists. Abita's heart has been taken by Minor Barret, a white neighbor who gets called away to fight in the war. U [...]

  • I've read a number of Civil War stories but they have all been told from the point of view of either black or white people. This one is told from the point of view of Abita who was an Indian. Well, mostly Indian; her mother was a Choctaw Indian and her father was half French Canadian and half Indian. Seeing the Civil War period from her point of view was quite interesting and her personal quest was very moving and inspirational.

  • Well written story based during the Civil War. A girl who is part Native American is given to a Southern family as housekeeper by her Choctaw mother who hopes for a better life for her daughter. This is her first introduction into the "civilized" world.Times passes and the war comes to their small town and her life is shattered. First love, the loss of her sweetheart to treachery and the war and her struggles to regain her wounded love and bring him home from the war.Enjoyable read.

  • I started this book without much expectation, knowing I could just delete it if I didn't like it. I got caught up in the story and not only finished it but thoroughly enjoyed it. The "Woman In-Between" is a half breed Choctaw who starts out her story as a child and carries it through to the end of the Civil War. She narrates from the Southern perspective.

  • Historical fictionThis book is historical fiction, with a lot of emphasis on the fiction it offers an unusual perspective, of that of a half Indian, half-white, young lady, who falls in love with a white man. Against all odds, she goes to him after he has married, is injured, and then his wife attempts to kill him. In the end, there is the expected resolution.

  • I highly recommend this book, especially if you are traveling through Louisiana and Mississippi as I was when I picked it up. Beautifully written!

  • This is a well-written book that was very engrossing. The characters were very believable and easily imagined by the reader.

  • I found that Abita's perspective of events surrounding the Civil War were very interesting. I also enjoyed the developing love between Abita and Minor. It is a quick-paced tale that is worth reading.
